How Long Does Reupholstering a Sofa Take?

The honest answer: it depends on four stages

There is no single turnaround number, and anyone who gives you one without seeing the piece is guessing. A reupholstery job moves through four separate stages, and the total time is those stages added together, not the bench work alone. Understanding each one is the easiest way to set your own expectations and to spot where you can genuinely save time.

Stage 1: The quote from a photo (within 24 hours)

This is the fast part. Send us a few clear photos of the piece and a short note on what you want done, and we come back with an honest assessment and a written quote, usually within 24 hours. There is no waiting on an in-home visit before you get a straight answer.

For most jobs a photo tells us what we need: the style, the construction, the condition of the frame and cushions, and roughly how much fabric it will take. Stage 2: Fabric selection and ordering (the usual bottleneck)

This is where most of the real waiting happens, and it is almost entirely in your hands. Once you have a quote, you choose a fabric. If you land on something we can source from an in-stock Australian range, it can be here within a few days. If you fall in love with a special-order colourway or an imported designer range, the mill lead time can add two, four, even six weeks or more, and that is before a single staple comes out.

Special-order and imported cloth is worth the wait when the look matters, and plenty of clients happily wait for exactly the right fabric. The important thing is knowing that up front rather than being surprised by it. If speed is your priority, tell us early and we will steer you toward ranges that are held in stock. The best move is to pick your fabric while you are in the booking queue rather than after, so the cloth is arriving at the same time your workshop slot is coming up. Deciding early is genuinely the biggest thing you can do to shorten the whole job.

Stage 3: The booking slot (the workshop queue)

A good workshop is usually booked ahead, so there is often a short wait for a bench slot to open. Depending on the time of year this can be anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. The lead-up to Christmas and the period just after the end of the financial year tend to be the busiest, so if you have a deadline, get in touch earlier rather than later.

Booking ahead also lets the fabric lead time and the queue overlap instead of stacking on top of each other. If your special-order cloth is going to take three weeks to arrive, and our next slot is three weeks out, those two waits run side by side and cost you nothing extra in time.

Stage 4: The bench time (the actual work)

This is the hands-on part, and it varies more than people expect. A drop-in dining seat is a quick job. A full lounge that needs stripping back to the frame, new webbing, springs re-tied, fresh foam and a careful recover is days of skilled work by an upholsterer, a machinist sewing the covers, and often a restorer on the frame. Complexity matters as much as size: deep buttoning, piping, welts and matched patterns all add hours.

Typical turnaround by item type

The ranges below are realistic guides for the whole job once your fabric is decided, covering the workshop slot and the bench time together. Add fabric lead time on top if you have chosen a special-order or imported range. Every piece is individual, so treat these as expectations, not promises.

What speeds your job up

• Choose an in-stock fabric. An Australian range held in stock can arrive in days instead of weeks. This is the single biggest lever you control.
• Decide on fabric early. Lock it in while you are in the booking queue so the cloth and the bench slot line up.
• Drop the piece off rather than wait on a pickup slot. If you can bring the item to us in Eltham North, or arrange your own transport, you skip waiting for a collection run and the job can start sooner.
• Keep it a straight recover. Simple recovers move faster than full strip-and-rebuilds with new springs and foam.
• Book ahead of the busy periods. Getting in before the pre-Christmas rush or the post-June crunch means a shorter queue.
• Be quick on approvals. If we send a fabric sample or a question mid-job, a fast yes keeps the piece moving.

What slows your job down

• Special-order or imported fabric. Beautiful, and worth it, but the mill lead time can add several weeks.
• Back-ordered cloth. Occasionally a range is out of stock at the mill and we wait on the next production run. We flag this the moment we know.
• Hidden damage found on teardown. Once a piece is opened up we sometimes find perished webbing, broken springs, cracked frame joints or crumbling foam that the covers were hiding. Fixing it properly is the whole point of doing the job once, but it adds time. We always call you before doing extra work, never after.
• Complex detailing. Deep buttoning, piping, welts, skirts and pattern matching all add hours at the machine and the bench.
• Peak season. The busiest weeks of the year mean a longer wait for a slot.

Setting realistic expectations

The short version: nothing about quality reupholstery is instant, and it should not be. Rushing a strip-and-rebuild is how corners get cut. What we can promise is a clear, honest timeline before you commit, regular updates while your piece is with us, and a call before any unexpected work rather than a surprise at the end.
