Moran Chesterfields are worth keeping

A Moran Chesterfield was built properly: a solid hardwood frame, good leather and real craftsmanship. Thirty years on, the frame underneath is usually still sound, which is the expensive part and the reason these lounges are so worth restoring rather than replacing. Almost everything that wears out on a Moran is renewable. The two things we see again and again are soft seat foams and worn leather on the cushions, and both are very fixable.

Soft, sunken seat foams

The most common Moran complaint is the seat foam going soft. After decades of daily use the original foam loses its support and you start to sink in instead of sitting up. We replace it with high-density Dunlop foam, wrapped in Dacron so it holds a full, rounded shape and a comfortable feel. Worn and split leather on the seat cushions

The seat cushions take the most use of any part of the couch, so that is where the leather wears out first. The top of the cushion, the piping and the front border tend to thin, crack and eventually split, while the rest of the lounge still looks good. Rather than recover the whole thing, we make new pieces just for the worn areas in a Tasman rub-off leather, a beautiful pull-up hide. From there you have two choices: let the new leather wear in and age organically so it blends over time, or we rub it back by hand straight away so it matches the rest of the couch from day one. Another thirty years

Between renewing the seat foams and repairing the worn leather, a tired thirty-year-old Moran comes back to life for a fraction of what a new lounge of the same quality would cost, and it will comfortably last you another thirty years. That is the whole point: these are genuinely good couches, so they are worth keeping.

In or out of warranty

Most Moran repairs come to us long after any warranty has ended, which is exactly where an independent workshop helps. We are not here to sell you a new lounge, we just restore the one you have, and on a piece this well made that is nearly always the smarter choice.

Send us a photo of your Moran and the problem, along with your suburb. We give you a clear written quote, usually within 24 hours, with no obligation. Some smaller repairs we can do on-site at your home. Larger jobs come back to our Eltham North workshop where we can strip, re-foam and re-leather them properly. A call-out fee applies for site visits, and we will work out the easiest way to get your lounge to us and back.
