Upholstery · Alphington
Alphington keeps a lot of good furniture in circulation. Pieces that came with a house, or came down through a family, and are worth rebuilding properly rather than replacing. We strip them back, sort out the frame and the springing underneath, and recover them by hand. Send a photo and you will have a written quote inside 24 hours, free, with nothing owing if you decide against it.

We reupholster sofas, lounges, armchairs, dining chairs and ottomans, and we do the full rebuild when the inside has given up. That usually means new hessian and webbing, springs re-tied nine ways by hand where the piece calls for it, and Dunlop HR35 high resilience foam so a seat holds its shape for years rather than months. HR35 comes in 200 firm and 165 medium and carries a ten year warranty, and we will talk you through which suits the piece and the way you sit in it. Antique and heirloom restoration is a large part of what comes to us from Alphington, including timber and frame repairs, French polishing to bring back a dulled finish, and leather repair and recolour on pieces that are sound underneath but looking tired. We also make bed heads and ottomans to measure, which earns its keep in the older bedrooms around here where a picture rail or a chimney breast rules out anything off the shelf. Frame work carries our thirty year guarantee.
Local
Alphington sits in a pocket of the river that has not changed much. Edwardian houses and interwar bungalows on deep blocks, established gardens, and newer townhouses down towards the old paper mill site. The furniture reflects it. We see a lot of wing chairs and club chairs that were recovered once in the seventies and never touched again, dining sets where two chairs out of six have gone in the joints, and the occasional chaise that has been in the same front room for fifty years. Where earlier repairs have been done badly, we will show you what we found underneath before it goes in the bin, because that is usually the only record of who built the piece and when. The run in from Eltham North is a straight one down Heidelberg Road, so pickup and delivery gets booked for a day that suits you rather than a day that suits us. We cover the Fairfield, Ivanhoe and Kew East borders on the same trip.
Good to know
Yes. Alphington 3078 is a regular run for us, from the Station Street and Heidelberg Road shops through to the streets running down to the Yarra and Como Park, and across the Fairfield, Ivanhoe, Eaglemont and Kew East borders on the same trip. Heidelberg Road gets us in from the Eltham North workshop without any fuss, so pickup and delivery can be arranged around you.
It depends on the piece and what is under the cover, so we quote each one rather than working off a price list. A dining chair seat is a small job. A three seater that needs the frame repaired, the springs re-tied and new foam throughout is a different proposition. The two things that move the number most are how much rebuilding the inside needs and how many metres of fabric the piece takes. Send a photo and tell us roughly what is wrong with it, and we will come back inside 24 hours with a written quote that separates the labour from the materials so you can see where the money goes. The quote is free and there is nothing owing if you decide against it.
The honest answer is that it depends on the fabric more than on us. Small drop in dining seats can often go same or next day if you give us a little notice. A sofa or couch is usually about a couple of weeks once the fabric is here. The two things that stretch it are fabric that has to come in on order and frame damage that only shows up once the old cover is off. We give you the expected turnaround with the quote, and if something turns up during the strip that changes it we call you before we carry on rather than after.
Both. You are welcome to supply your own fabric or leather, and we will tell you honestly whether it will hold up on the piece you have in mind before we cut into it. If you would rather we sorted it, we bring samples to you and work through weight, weave and rub count against how the piece actually gets used. A wing chair in a formal front room and a sofa that takes the family every night are not the same brief. For period pieces in the older Alphington houses, most people land on a plain wool, a good linen or a leather, so the shape and the timber do the talking. We also work out the metreage as part of the quote so there are no surprises.
Yes, across Alphington and the surrounding suburbs. We wrap and load the piece ourselves, and we take the same care putting it back in the room as we do getting it out. If access is tight, a narrow hall, a staircase with a turn in it, or a first floor room, tell us when you send the photo and we will plan for it. Pickup and delivery is quoted with the job so it is not a line item that appears at the end.
Take a photo on your phone. Front on, one from the side so we can read the arm and back line, and a close up of anything loose, split or worn. Send it through the form on this page or text it to 0425 832 619, and tell us what you would like done. We reply within 24 hours with a written quote. It costs nothing and there is no obligation.
