We take on the pieces most shops now turn away. Wingbacks, club chairs, chesterfields, chaises, dining chairs with show wood and antique frames that need springs and joints attended to before anything else. Work is done the old way, hessian and webbing, nine-way hand-tied springs, hair and felt where the piece calls for it, then a hand-cut cover in your fabric or leather. Deep buttoning is set out by hand. Frame repairs carry our thirty year guarantee, and we hold 5.0 from 43 Google reviews.
Local
Strip a Balwyn wingback and you get a short history lesson before you get a chair. Under the current cover there are usually two or three earlier ones tacked straight over the top of each other, a bit of fifties barkcloth sitting on Victorian hessian, and every so often a folded newspaper used as packing that is older than anyone standing in the room. Chalk marks from the original maker turn up on the rails now and then, a name or a number written when the frame was first put together. We photograph whatever comes out and show you before it goes in the bin, because that is often the only record left of who built the thing and when.
Good to know
Yes. Balwyn 3103 and Balwyn North 3104 are both regular runs for us, from Whitehorse Road and the Balwyn Road shops through to the streets around Beckett Park and Maranoa Gardens, and across the Deepdene, Canterbury and Kew East edges. It is a straight run down from Eltham North for us.
Yes, and that is the whole point of doing it properly. Before we strip a piece we record the button spacing, the depth of each pull and the run of the arm and back, so the new work is set out off the original rather than guessed. If earlier repairs have already pulled the shape out of line we will tell you what we found and what it will take to bring it back. Antique frames are handled the same way, repaired in keeping rather than modernised.
That is the quickest way in. Front on, side on so we can read the arm and back line, and a close up of anything loose, split or worn. Use the form here or text 0425 832 619. We come back inside twenty four hours with a written quote, free, and with nothing owing if you decide against it.
