Look at what each quote actually includes rather than at the number on the bottom. A quote that separates labour from materials tells you something. One that gives a single figure with no breakdown does not. Ask what is happening under the cover, because a recover over tired webbing and collapsed springs will look fine for a year and then sag, and it will always be cheaper than a proper rebuild. Ask what foam is specified and whether it carries a warranty. Ask what is guaranteed and for how long. A cheap quote and an expensive quote are often quoting two completely different jobs.
Longer than people expect, and be wary of anyone promising otherwise. Small drop in dining seats can genuinely be same or next day with notice. A sofa is generally about a couple of weeks once the fabric is here. Frame repairs add time because glue has to cure. The single biggest variable on any job is fabric lead time, which is outside the upholsterer's control, so a good one will tell you that up front instead of quoting a date they cannot hold.
Some of both works best. You should choose the colour and the feel, because you are the one living with it. Take advice on weight, weave and durability, because that is where an upholsterer knows something you do not. A fabric that looks perfect in a showroom can be entirely wrong for a sofa that takes a family every night. Ask about rub count for anything that gets daily use. You are also welcome to supply your own material to any decent upholsterer, though a good one will tell you honestly if it will not hold up on the piece you have in mind.
Most will, and how they handle it tells you something about how they will handle the rest of the job. Ask whether transport is included or extra, and get the answer before the work starts rather than on the final invoice. For our own part, if you are close to the Eltham North workshop and it is a load one person can manage, we generally just do the run and it does not appear on the bill. Larger pieces or addresses further out go on a carrier and we write that cost into the quote from the start.
