Most of our Mitcham work is full recovers. The old cover comes off first, then we check and repair the frame, replace perished webbing, and retie or replace the springs, nine way hand tied where the piece was built that way. New Dunlop HR35 high resilience foam goes back in so the seat holds its shape instead of dropping again in a year. We take on three piece suites, wing chairs, recliners, dining settings, ottomans and the odd bedroom chair. There is usually timber involved too, so loose joints get reglued, split rails repaired, and dulled show wood French polished back rather than painted over. Leather gets fed, recoloured or panel replaced where the hide is still sound. Frame work carries our thirty year guarantee.

One question comes up on nearly every Mitcham quote: what happens when the original fabric no longer exists. On a suite bought thirty or forty years ago the answer is that it almost certainly does not, and has not for a long time. That sounds like bad news and it usually is not. Once you stop hunting a match that cannot be found, the choice opens up to what actually suits the shape of the piece and the room it lives in now, which is rarely the same room it was bought for. We bring samples to you, or you are welcome to come out to the workshop and look through them properly before anything is cut.

Yes, Mitcham 3132 is a regular run for us. We collect from the shops either side of the lowered station on Mitcham Road, the streets around Halliday Park, across to Rooks Road and Deep Creek Road, and out to the Nunawading, Vermont and Donvale edges. It sits neatly on our way through to Ringwood and the Warrandyte corridor, so pick-up and delivery can be set for a day that suits you.
Photos of the underside tell us a lot, so tip the piece over safely if you can and send one. What we are looking for is movement in the joints rather than surface wear. Older Australian suites were generally built with hardwood rails and dowelled or blocked corners, and those loosen long before they fail, which means gluing and re-blocking rather than replacing. A frame that rocks when you push the arm is usually fixable. We confirm all of it with the cover off before any fabric is ordered, and if we find something that changes the picture we ring you then, not after.
A couple of clear photos, a rough count of the pieces, and a note on how you want it to end up. If it is a suite, tell us how many seats. If it is a dining setting, tell us how many chairs and whether the carvers are included. Mention anything that already annoys you about the piece, a seat that has dropped, an arm that wobbles, a stain you would rather not look at again. We reply within 24 hours with a written quote with a plain recommendation attached, and no cost either way.
