An Eaglemont job
A large round solid oak dining table from an Eaglemont home came to us after nail polish remover had dissolved the finish in patches, someone had attempted a repair that dried in streaks, and water damage had bloomed underneath. We stripped the top back to bare oak, sanded it clean and refinished it in water-based polyurethane, chosen over traditional shellac because it is a table a family eats at every night.

Eaglemont homes
Eaglemont is an unusual pocket. Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin laid out the Mount Eagle estate in 1914 and the Glenard estate two years later, and the street pattern they drew, curving with the contours instead of cutting a grid across them, is still what the suburb feels like today. Around those estates sit Federation homes, interwar bungalows, Art Deco flats and a run of architect-designed houses from every decade since.
That mix shows up in the furniture people bring us. From the older houses it tends to be balloon-back and bentwood dining chairs, deep-sprung club lounges, carved parlour armchairs, chaises and blanket boxes. From the mid-century homes further up the hill it is more often low-slung lounge suites, wing chairs and teak-framed pieces where the timber is sound but the foam collapsed years ago.
Pieces from this era are almost always worth saving. Frames from before the 1970s were built from solid hardwood and jointed properly, which is exactly what makes them worth re-covering rather than replacing. The honest test is simple: if the frame is sound, reupholstery is nearly always the better decision. If it is not, we will tell you, and we would rather say so at the quote stage than halfway through the job.
We also make new. A good number of Eaglemont jobs are custom bed heads, window seats and ottomans built to fit a specific room, which is often the only way to work with an older house where nothing is a standard size and no two walls are quite square.
How we work
On period furniture we work the way the piece was originally built. Nine-way hand-tied springs where the frame calls for them, hessian and webbing replaced rather than patched, and horsehair kept and re-carded when the original stuffing is still good. Where a modern fill genuinely performs better we use Dunlop high-resilience foam, 200 for a firm seat and 165 for a medium one.
Because upholstery, machining and French polishing all happen under our roof, a chair needing new fabric, a re-glued frame and a polished timber show-wood never has to leave the building or wait on someone else's schedule. One team, one standard, start to finish.
Our hardwood frames carry a 30-year guarantee, we are fully insured, and between the three of us there is around 100 years of trade behind the bench.

Yes. Eaglemont is about a twenty minute run from the workshop, so pickup and delivery is straightforward and arranged to suit you. For narrow driveways or homes with stairs and tight landings, which is common around the Griffin estates, tell us when you book and we will bring the right gear and an extra pair of hands.
Yes, and it is a lot of what we do here. Older houses rarely have standard-sized rooms or square walls, so off-the-shelf pieces tend not to sit right. We measure on site, work to your shape and fabric, and build it to suit the space.
Usually, if the frame is sound. Furniture built before the 1970s was made from solid hardwood and jointed properly, which is what makes recovering it worthwhile. If a frame is past saving we will say so at the quote rather than partway through the job. Our is it worth reupholstering guide walks through how to check it yourself, and the cost guide gives you rough figures.
Yes. French polishing and timber restoration happen in the same workshop, so a piece needing both new fabric and a restored show-wood is handled start to finish by one team without going out to a third party.
