What actually wears out
Strip the cover off a tired banquette and the wear turns out to sit in a narrow band near the top. The cover goes first, along the front nose of the seat and at the seams where people slide in and out. Under it the foam has flattened at the ends of the run before the middle. Lower again, the webbing or springs have gone slack. Below all of that is a hardwood frame bolted to the wall, still doing its job.
Build a new banquette and the whole lot goes, frame included. That is what a manufacturer sells, and a venue sometimes genuinely needs it. Often the frame is the one part of the job that is not asking to be replaced. A new run replaces the structure as well, so it is worth knowing whether the frame in the room still has life in it before that decision is made. We are a re-upholstery workshop rather than a manufacturer, so stripping a run back and rebuilding it over the frame already there is the work this bench is set up for.
Fixed seating has an advantage a loose chair does not. It is bolted to the wall, so the building takes some of the load and the frame is not racking under use. That is why a hardwood frame on a fixed run can often be kept, and we check each one before we say so. What does need replacing is the comfort, and that is Dunlop HR35 foam at 165 medium or 200 firm, fire-grade as standard on venue seating, over webbing or springs brought back to tension.
There is a real exception: swollen ply at the base, or a frame that previous trades have cut about, and a recover is the wrong answer. We build new to drawings when that is the case and we say so at the quote, and our venue seating guide runs through the rest of the cases where new seating is the right call.

We quote per run rather than per seat, because the number that matters is how many linear metres of banquette you have and what is happening underneath it. A straight run that only needs recovering is a different job to one where the ply has swollen, the foam has collapsed at the ends where people slide in, or the base framing has worked loose. Send photos of the run end to end plus a close up of any split seams or soft spots, and we come back with a written quote that separates labour from materials so you can see what is driving the figure. Usually it is not, because we stage the work in sections. We take one run or one bank of seating at a time, so the rest of the room keeps trading while we work. If the job suits it we come in before or after service rather than during. The honest variable is fabric or vinyl lead time, which is what sets the start date more than our bench does. We give you a schedule with the quote and we work to it.
Both, depending on what the job needs. Fixed banquettes that are built into the wall get done on site. Loose bases, backs and squabs that can be lifted out come back to the Eltham North workshop where we can do a better job of them on the bench, then go back in. If pieces are close by and one person can shift them we usually just handle it ourselves. For larger runs we arrange a carrier and that gets quoted with the job so it is not a surprise at the end.
Recent work
A new fit-out with no off the shelf option that suited, so the banquettes were built to measure in an Austex embossed vinyl chosen by their fit-out lead, top stitched all round.
Several banquette seats had broken through and were repaired rather than replaced, alongside a refresh of the bar stools and drop in seats. Not every banquette job is a rebuild, and we will tell you when a repair is the right call.
Upholsterer, first. A banquette is fixed to the wall, which is why the frame is usually the part we keep: strip it back, re-foam and recover over the run that is already there. New builds to drawings are the smaller side of what we do, and the quote will say which one your run needs.
Two checks that are specific to fixed seating. Put a hand on the run where it meets the wall and see whether the fixings have worked loose, which happens well before anything fails. Then look at the ply at the base for swelling or dark staining, because mop water and a leaking wall both show up there first. Those are the two that decide it, and we confirm with the cover off.
